Further to new guidelines produced by the American Heart Association, TGL liaised with the Heart Foundation and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and set up a special cross-disciplinary expert group to update the topic in Therapeutic Guidelines.

In summary, the changes are:

• The list of cardiac conditions for which prophylaxis is recommended is much shorter and only includes conditions associated with the highest risk of adverse outcomes from endocarditis.  
• The list of procedures for which endocarditis prophylaxis should be given is more precise.
